ClubSpotting with Ciara Hickey

Galway Camogie corner back Ciara Hickey tasted success with her teammates as they defeated Cork 0-13 to 0-11 in the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie Championship Final in Croke Park last year. Ciara was the Captain of the Minor team for the 2022 season and was also awarded player of the match in the Semi Final. Her success and achievements continued after she received the PwC Camogie Soaring Star Award in November. We headed to the west of the country to Galway to go ClubSpotting with Ciara Hickey.

1. Describe your first memory of Davitts Camogie Club?

My first memory of my club was going training for the first time I really hadn’t a clue about camogie or much interest at all but we played duck duck goose and I was hooked from there on.

2. Who were your sporting idols growing up?

I’ve always looked up to Maria Brehany and Lorraine Farrell they won the all Ireland with Galway in 2013 and they brought the cup to Tynagh afterwards, I remember just being in awe of all the team.

I really admire Shauna Healy and Carrie Dolan as players. They are tough out and never give up, I’m lucky to be playing with the likes of them this year.

3. What has been the proudest moment of your playing career so far?

The proudest moment of my career so far was definitely winning the Minor A Club Championship. We did a fair amount of sloggin through Winter training, but luckily it all payed off. There’s just something special about winning with the girls you grew up with.

Winning the all-Ireland intermediate final was definitely a big highlight of my career to date. Being such a young team mixed with a few experienced players we actually really gelled well together. No one really had any expectations of us to win so there was no real pressure and we always had the craic that all made the win much more sweeter.

4. Who is the toughest opponent you have faced?

The toughest opponent I have face would have to be Dervla Higgins, she’s very sticky and has an unreal touch.

5. Who is the best player you have played with?

The best player I have played with is probably Katie Anna Porter, we play together so much in club and county that it’s easy to pick out passes and we work well together.

6. What are your hopes and ambitions for the new season?

I’m doing the Leaving Cert at the minute but I hope to stay involved and progress in the Senior A Championship, we got to the quarter finals last year so I’m hopping this year to make it to the semi’s/final and hopefully to win an all Ireland!
