ClubSpotting with Robbie McDaid

Perseverance is key. During the 2020 season at the age of 27, Robbie McDaid finally found himself a regular starting spot on the Dublin team, who at the time were gunning for an unheard of, 6th All-Ireland title in a row. Earning himself an All-Star nomination and very unlucky in not winning one, he was something of an overnight success and the rest of the country wondered how somebody so talented could be confined to the reserves for so long. But therein lies the mental fortitude of the Ballyboden man. This week we went ClubSpotting with Robbie McDaid to Ballyboden St. Enda's.

What are your first memories of your club Ballyboden St. Enda’s?

Playing football in the summer camp and enjoying the end of camp water fight!

Who were your sporting idols growing up?

Henrik Larsson, Paul Durcan, and Karl Lacey. As a big Celtic fan, I grew up idolising Larsson and always admired how professional he was. With Paul being my cousin and my dad being from Donegal, I travelled the length of the country for Donegal matches and always aspired to be like my cousin and play intercounty football. As a defender, I looked up to Karl Lacey, how he defended and attacked and led the team. He is one of the best defenders to have played the game.

What has been the proudest moment of your playing career?

Winning the club All Ireland with Ballyboden St. Endas in 2016. To win the All Ireland with your club and the lads you’ve grown up with is something that can’t be topped.

Toughest opponent you have faced?

Jamie Clarke – Armagh. I had a tough day out against him in a Sigerson match many years ago. Needless to say I learnt a lot that day!

Best player you have played with?

Diarmuid Connolly. He could do it all, right foot, left foot, instep, outstep, you name it! I would’ve marked him a lot in trainings and always enjoyed the challenge.

Any pre-game rituals or superstitions?

I don’t know if it’s a ritual as such but I tend to check my gear bag at least 5 times before leaving the house for a match to make sure I don’t forget my boots and gumshield!

What are your hopes and ambitions for 2022?

Stay fit and healthy and win some trophies with club and county.

Ballyboden St. Enda's are currently giving you the chance to win a Brand New Opel Corsa, you can enter here.
