After years of having no Camogie team, Cavan have re-entered the inter-county scene as if they never went away. They nearly performed a miracle in 2020 when reaching the All-Ireland final, where they narrowly lost out to Armagh. One of the driving forces of the resurgence is Sinead McKenna. There is no limit to the dual star's talents, deservedly picking up awards at both club and county level. This week we went ClubSpotting with Sinead McKenna to Crosserlough.
What are your first memories of your club Crosserlough?
My Father dropping me to my first Crosserlough training saying "Jesus this better be worth it, could you have picked a club any further away" I can confirm it has been more than worth it. The best memories I have with my late father are all thanks to this club and all my teammates and their work rate and drive for success in both codes, I'm extremely lucky and grateful to be a part of this club.
Who were your sporting idols growing up?
Galway’s Therese Maher and her never give up attitude and Rena Buckley is an inspiration to all dual players.
What has been the proudest moment of your playing career?
In 2019 within 7 days I won a senior club camogie championship final and a senior club football championship final with Crosserlough in Breffni Park and an Intermediate Camogie All Ireland final with Westmeath in Croke Park, all with both my parents proudly watching.
Toughest opponent you have faced?
Has to be Crosserloughs Aoishe O Reilly, we are two very competitive people and try to beat each other at everything. The only thing I'll agree she’s better than me at is River Dance.
Best Player you have played with?
Crosserloughs Lorraine Day is one of the most dedicated and hardworking players I've ever played alongside. Also Cavan ladies captain Laura Fitzpatrick is an amazing leader both on and off the pitch.
Any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
I’m pretty attached to my club No12 jersey, I don’t like a grip on my hurl and I have to call to my home house before big games.
What are your hopes and ambitions for the 2022 season?
I hope for more success in the Crosserlough jersey alongside my teammates in both codes. I hope for Shauna Lynch, Muireann Cusack, Lauren McVeety and Kate Smith to become dual players again. Also hoping for a division 2 league football win with the Cavan Ladies team and alongside my other club teammates. Maybe another team holiday, the team bonding sessions are key if you ask me.
